Nasik, Panchavati - What great historic place in India. This place is more than 870,000 years old.
Located on the banks of the holy Godavari River, Nasik (or Nashik) gets its name from the episode in the Ramayana where Lakshmana, Rama’s brother, hacked off the nasika (nose) of Ravana’s sister.
Panchavati is located in Nasik. It is located on the banks of River Godavari. Sage Agastiya had his hermitage here. Lord Rama, with Sita and Lakshman on their wandering years in forest, stopped by here and took rest. This is where things turned south for them and rest of Ramayan happened. The name Panchavati came due to the fact that Lord Rama identified the cave where they were resting in the forest by the location of 5 trees. The trees are numbered and the cave is still maintained and you can visit the cave.
